Similar genres that tie in to this movement is the soul records and R&B genres. Soul records originated in the United States in the 1950's and combined gospel music with the blues. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame referred to soul as, "music that arose out of the black experience in America..." Often credited to Ray Charles in his classic 1954 hit, "I Got a Woman," the 60's saw a rise of R&B and soul musicians. Artists who originally labeled themselves as rock musicians soon began saying they had always been R&B and as Little Richard put it, "king of rockin' and rollin', rhythm and blues soulin." In the later part of the decade these popular music styles began forming into newer genres and meshing with other ones to create a varied genre of music.

A former U.S. Marine turned Mercury Records staff producer responsible for everything from Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" to Ray Stevens' "Ahab the Arab," Shelby Singleton formed his Nashville-based SSS International Group in 1966. Although best known for fare like Jeannie C. Riley's country-pop juggernaut "Harper Valley P.T.A.," SSS and its spinoffs, Silver Fox and Minaret, also generated a vast sampling of deep-fried soul, of which Kent's "Southern Soul Showcase: Cryin' in the Streets" represents the first official digital survey to date. In comparison to the backwoods soul wrought in places like Memphis and Muscle Shoals, SSS productions are clearly the product of Nashville the songs blur the lines between soul and country to the point where such distinctions become irrelevant.

All-star albums are usually dodgy affairs, but the over-arching talents and, more importantly, production experience of Masters at Work's Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega keep Nuyorican Soul from being overburdened with cooks. Roy Ayers, George Benson, and Jazzy Jeff contribute prominently to four tracks, and vocalists Jocelyn Brown and India (Vega's wife) are heard as well, but over half of the album is comprised of instrumental tracks several which include Tito Puente on vibes and timbales, flutist Dave Valentin, trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, organist/arranger Hilton Ruiz, and trombonist Steve Turre. In keeping with Masters at Work's heritage, most of the album is Latin in feel and jazzy in composition, but with ever-present synths and piano runs that belie their heavy dance heritage. Not that it's a crowded field, but Nuyorican Soul is one of the best all-star dance albums ever recorded.
